Paralysis and Stroke Rehabilitation Physiotherapy

When a stroke or paralysis changes life overnight, the right physiotherapy, started early and repeated consistently, is what brings movement back. We bring that care to your home across North Ahmedabad.

Understanding paralysis after a stroke

A stroke happens when blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted. The brain cells in that area stop working, and the body parts they control stop responding. When one side of the body is affected, doctors call it hemiplegia (complete weakness) or hemiparesis (partial weakness). For the family, it simply looks like a parent or spouse who could walk to the temple last week and now cannot lift a spoon.

Here is the fact that matters most: the brain can rewire itself. This ability, called neuroplasticity, is strongest in the first three to six months after a stroke, and it responds to one thing above all, repeated, guided practice of movement. That is exactly what neurological physiotherapy provides.

What paralysis looks like day to day

What causes paralysis

Stroke is the most common cause we see, either from a blocked artery (ischaemic stroke) or a bleed (haemorrhagic stroke). Paralysis can also follow head injury, spinal cord injury, brain tumour surgery, or nerve conditions such as Guillain-Barre syndrome. Whatever the cause, once doctors have stabilised the person medically, the recovery of movement runs on the same engine: structured, progressive rehabilitation.

Red flags: hospital first, physiotherapy second

Act FAST on new symptoms. If you notice a new facial droop, arm weakness, or speech difficulty, or a sudden severe headache, do not book physiotherapy. Go to the nearest emergency department immediately. Every minute of early stroke treatment saves brain tissue. Physiotherapy begins only after the medical team says the person is stable.

Also inform the treating doctor urgently if a recovering patient develops fever, a swollen painful calf, chest pain, breathlessness, new confusion, or a sudden worsening of weakness. These need medical review before rehab continues.

How physiotherapy helps the brain relearn

Neurological physiotherapy is not massage and it is not passive waiting. It is a training programme for the brain, delivered through the body. In practice that means:

Stroke rehabilitation at Physio Buddy

Dr. Maitri Kothari (BPT, MPT) holds an advanced certification in neurological physiotherapy and has guided stroke and paralysis recoveries throughout her 10+ years of practice. Every programme starts with a detailed assessment: what the person can do today, what the family wants back first, and what the home environment allows. From there we build a week-by-week plan with honest, measurable goals, sitting unsupported, standing for one minute, walking to the bathroom, climbing the society stairs.

Because most stroke patients cannot easily travel in the early months, our home visit physiotherapy service is usually the right fit. We treat patients at home across Chandkheda, Motera, Gandhinagar and nearby North Ahmedabad, and we can review progress between visits on a virtual consultation.

Training the family as co-therapists

Recovery is decided by what happens between sessions. So at every home visit we teach one or two family members the day's exercises, safe transfer techniques (bed to chair, chair to toilet), correct positioning of the weak arm and leg, and what to watch for. A trained caregiver turns 3 sessions a week into daily therapy, and that is often the difference between plateau and progress.

Simple starter movements, with caution

These are commonly used early-stage movements. Please have them checked by a physiotherapist before making them routine, because every stroke is different.

  1. Supported arm elevation: lying on the back, clasp both hands together and let the strong arm lift the weak arm towards the ceiling, 10 slow repetitions.
  2. Bridging: lying with both knees bent, lift the hips a few centimetres and hold for 3 seconds, 10 repetitions. This builds hip strength for standing.
  3. Weight shifts in sitting: sitting at the edge of the bed with feet flat and a caregiver beside, gently shift weight side to side to train trunk balance.
  4. Ankle pumps: move both feet up and down 20 times every waking hour to help circulation and keep the calf flexible.

How long does recovery take?

Honest answer: it varies with the size and location of the stroke, the person's age and general health, and how early rehab starts. Most visible recovery happens in the first 6 months, with the fastest gains in the first 12 weeks, which is why we push to start within days of medical stability. Improvement can continue for a year or more with consistent work. Physiotherapy cannot promise a full cure, no ethical clinician can, but it reliably maximises whatever recovery the brain is capable of, and it prevents the second-layer problems (frozen shoulders, contractures, falls, bedsores) that make paralysis worse than it needs to be.

Why home-based neuro rehab makes sense in Ahmedabad

Transporting a paralysed patient across the city twice a week is exhausting for everyone and often means therapy simply stops. Home visits remove that barrier. Therapy also transfers better when it is practised in the real environment, the person's own bed, their own bathroom door, the actual stairs of their building in Chandkheda or Motera. For families in Gandhinagar and Motera, we schedule fixed weekly slots so therapy becomes routine, not an event. Frequently Asked Questions

Can paralysis be cured completely with physiotherapy?

No honest clinician can promise a complete cure, because recovery depends on how much brain tissue was affected. What physiotherapy reliably does is maximise the recovery your brain is capable of, and prevent complications like stiffness, contractures and falls. Many of our patients regain independent walking and daily self-care; some regain nearly full function. We set realistic goals at the first assessment and update them as progress unfolds.

When should physiotherapy start after a stroke?

As soon as the treating doctor confirms the person is medically stable, often within the first week. The brain's rewiring capacity is highest in the first three to six months, so every early week counts. Even in hospital, simple positioning and bed mobility work can begin.

Do you provide paralysis physiotherapy at home in Ahmedabad?

Yes, home visits are the backbone of our neuro rehab service. We visit patients across Chandkheda, Motera, Gandhinagar and nearby North Ahmedabad areas. Dr. Maitri brings the necessary equipment, and we also train a family member at each visit so exercises continue daily.

How many sessions per week does a stroke patient need?

Most patients start with 3 to 6 sessions a week in the early phase, then taper as the family takes over the daily exercise routine. The exact frequency depends on the severity of weakness and how much the caregivers can safely do between visits. We adjust the plan every few weeks based on measured progress.

What can family members do between sessions?

A great deal, and it genuinely changes outcomes. We teach caregivers correct positioning of the weak arm and leg, safe transfers, and a short daily exercise list. Consistent daily practice guided by a trained family member is one of the strongest predictors of good recovery.

Is home physiotherapy as effective as clinic treatment for stroke?

For most stroke patients, yes, and sometimes better, because skills are practised in the exact environment where they will be used, the patient's own bed, bathroom and stairs. Patients who later regain good mobility can shift to our Chandkheda clinic for advanced balance and gait work if they wish.

How much does home physiotherapy for paralysis cost?

Clinic physiotherapy in Ahmedabad typically ranges from Rs 300 to 800 per session, and home visits cost somewhat more because of travel time and equipment. We share an exact quote on call or WhatsApp (+91 78619 29326) after understanding the patient's condition and location.
